Remembering Places That Have Never Existed

It’s settled: I need to visit the island of Menorca. Located in the Mediterranean Sea and belonging to Spain, this gorgeous island is home to about 94,000 people, three ancient megalithic monuments, one of my favorite wines, and the always delicious cow’s milk cheese called Mahon. All of which is more than reason enough to visit. Blueberry Excess: A Visit to Red Twig Bakery and Cafe

“It was the best espresso I ever tasted.”

That’s what the guest at Fran’s Chocolates told me. I had just made him a doppio and he’d sipped it thoughtfully – but now he wasn’t talking about the espresso I’d pulled for him. He was talking about a place in Edmonds called Red Twig. Mind you, he it’s not that he disliked the espresso he’d finished mere seconds ago. On the contrary, it slapped a big smile on his face. Seattle Bestiary: The Birds of Don Charles

The hawk’s tail feathers are crafted of copper. The pelican has silver forks coming out of its head. The ostrich, given the available evidence, would seem to have a belt fetish.

Seattle’s Patricia Rovzar Gallery is currently featuring some sculptures by Don Charles. They’ve been doing it for a few years now, actually. Can you blame them? When you’re walking down the street and spy an ostrich statue with piercing eyes and pale bouquet of white nails jutting from its face, aren’t you compelled to stop and perhaps go inside for a closer look?

Lastwear: Dressing Up for the End of the World

I normally wouldn’t do this. Promoting a line of clothing isn’t exactly what I had in mind when I began The Shaggy Elephant. But this is a special case — and, in case you haven’t noticed, there isn’t exactly a specific theme to The Shaggy Elephant, so I have the privilege of writing about whatever I like.
